If you can imagine an edition of "Father Ted" mixed in with one of "Mr Benn" then you'll not go far wrong with this really quite funny observation of when it is, or isn't, ok to go exploring your body with your - or someone else's - finger! A novice arrives at the church door to face a barrage of questions that essentially sum up the church's attitude to homosexuality. Passing this exam - but only just - he is admitted and is soon annoying his mentor with questions that cast some doubts of the certainly of some of their biblical doctrine. The elder father's responses are usually something along the lines of "if it's possible, then the bible is literal; if it's impossible then the bible if figurative". In any case it is not to be argued with. The sheer innocence of the younger lad does begin to affect his boss, though, and as we proceed entertainingly we see a rapprochement and perhaps even a friendship develop between these polar opposites of the same faith. When the internship is up, will they both be glad or might there be tears? Now if you are a dyed-in-the-wool member of the Catholic faith then you might find some of this disrespectful, even sacriligious, but for the rest of us heathens this offers a frequently quite potent critique on the hypocrisies and double-standards of written theology. Gay folks are clearly the "target" here, but women don't come off so much better as the two men illustrate effectively how religion rather makes it up as it goes along to achieve it's desired result. It's good fun, this, and well worth a few minutes for some reflective relief.
