A historical drama recounting the uprising of Flemish peasants against the armies of the French Republic in 1798–1799. The story is seen through the eyes of a family reluctantly drawn into the Peasants’ War, when their son is executed for sheltering a fugitive priest. In the aftermath of a raid on a French commander, Jan, the son-in-law, dons the commander’s uniform to steal the plans of a munitions depot in Wallonia—and set the entire building ablaze. Against all odds, he succeeds, but his triumph comes at the ultimate price: his life.
