Carmen, 25, an artist and dancer, returns to her parents' home to celebrate her mother Maria's 60th birthday. Immersed in the difficult daily life of her parents, Portuguese immigrants and butchers, she is confronted with the pain and injustice of a life shaped by tradition and her mother's sacrifices.
