One day in 1934, Urano Suzu, a young girl living in Eba , Hiroshima City, is kidnapped while on her way home. However, thanks to Shusaku, a boy who was captured earlier, she manages to escape. Suzu returns home safely, but the events of the day seem like a dream.
Time passes and it is the autumn of 1943. Suzu is helping out at her grandmother Morita Ito's house with her younger sister Sumi. Her aunt informed her that someone is at their house in Eba who wants Suzu as a bride. While rushing home, Suzu meets her childhood friend Mizuhara Tetsu (Murakami Nijiro), who has joined the Marine Corps . Suzu is confused as she thought Tetsu is the man.
Meanwhile, at Urano household, Hojo Shusaku and his father Entaro are waiting for Suzu to return home. Suzu's father, Urano Juro, and mother, Kiseno, are embarrassed and continued their conversation. Shusaku says he had fallen in love with Suzu before, but when Suzu sneaks a peek into the house, she has no recollection of him at all.
It's been days since Suzu (Matsumoto Honoka) married Hojo Shusaku (Matsuzaka Tori). The Hojo family home is located on a mountain with no running water, so Suzu's daily routine is to fetch water from the community well. Her next-door neighbor, Kariya Taki (Kino Hana) , tells her about the neighborhood. She's gradually become acquainted with the neighbors, like Taki's daughter, Sachiko (Ito Sari), and Domoto Shino (Tsuchimura Kaori). Suzu begins to realize that she has become a bride.
Suzu wants to learn the family customs from her mother-in-law, San (Ito Ran), but is reluctant to ask because San has a bad leg. Meanwhile, San also does not interfere with the housework.
One day, Keiko (Ono Machiko) returns to the Hojo household with her daughter Harumi (Inagaki Raizumi). Keiko tells Suzu that she will take care of the Hojo household chores and that she should go back to her parents' home. Suzu decides to return to her parents' home one month after getting married.
One night in June 1944, the first air raid siren sounded in Kure. As the city gradually became more war-torn, the Hojo and Kariya families decided to jointly dig an air raid shelter. Suzu couldn't help but find Shusaku cool. Her sister-in-law Keiko (Machiko Ono) and Sachiko Kariya (Sari Ito) were not happy with this, and being harsh towards her. Then Suzu learned that Shusaku had another marriage proposal.
Suzu accidentally drops some sugar into a water jug while observing ants with Keiko's daughter, Harumi (Inagaki Raizumi). Sugar is a luxury item that will be discontinued from rationing starting in August. Her mother-in-law , San (Ito Ran) gives Suzu some money to buy sugar at the black market.
While Suzu was walking home from the black market, she suddenly finds herself lost in an unfamiliar place. She asks passersby on her way home, but no one knows where she is. At a loss, Suzu is approached by a woman named Rin (Nikaido Fumi).
One day in August 1944, while Suzu (Matsumoto Honoka) was sketching Kure Bay from the terraced fields, a passing military police officer sternly accused her of espionage. Although the situation was somehow resolved, Suzu was so shocked and filled with fear until she was unwell.
That night, Suzu's family is worried because she's still not feeling well. They debate whether she's suffering from summer fatigue, and Entaro (Taguchi Tomorowo) suggests she might be pregnant. This sudden remark makes San (Ito Ran) and Keiko (Ono Machiko) visibly uncomfortable.
The next day, Suzu visits the Asahi Red Light District on her way home from the hospital. She reunites with Rin (Nikaido Fumi) and they have a lively chat.
One day, the Hojo family has a guest. Keiko's eldest son, Hisao (Oyama Rento), who she left behind at the Kuromura family home in Hiroshima, has come to Hojo family home in Kure. Hisao has come with a certain resolve. Keiko has a vague idea of it, but...
One day in December 1944, while Suzu (Matsumoto Honoka) was fetching water, Mizuhara Tetsu (Murakami Nijiro), came to see Suzu. Suzu took Mizuhara to the Hojo family home, but Mizuhara asked to stay the night. San (Ito Ran) and Keiko (Ono Machiko) were surprised by the sudden visitor, but soon began to enjoy the situation.
When Shusaku (Matsuzaka Tori) returns home , he sees Mizuhara's face and remembers meeting him before. However, he becomes upset when he hears Mizuhara talk about Suzu's past, which Shusaku does not know about. Mizuhara continues to smile and play, unaware of Shusaku's feelings. Caught between the two, Suzu is worried.
Dinner is soon over, and Mizuhara and Shusaku are left alone in the living room. Mizuhara opens up about his experiences and feelings on the battleship. Upon hearing this, Shusaku tells Mizuhara to sleep in the barn. He then tell Suzu to go over and talk about old times.
It's the spring of 1945. Air raids hit Kure and the shadow of war grows darker with each passing day. The Hojo family plans a cherry blossom viewing party in light of the current situation.
At the park, they see a large crowd of citizens enjoying the cherry blossoms. Suzu spots Rin (Nikaido Fumi) in the crowd and becomes upset instead. While everyone is cheering on Sachiko and Naruse, who are meeting for the first time, Suzu leaves the family to meet Rin. They both have things they want to say, but their conversation doesn't quite click. However, Suzu feels like Rin can see right through her.
One day, some time after the cherry blossom viewing, news comes on the radio that a factory has been bombed. Entaro (Taguchi Tomorowo) works at the factory. Shusaku, who was a civilian, is becoming a military officer and will leave home for about three months due to training. Suzu is left speechless by the sudden news.
Suzu (Matsumoto Honoka) wakes up to find herself in the Hojo household. Her whole body is covered in bandages and she cannot move. It feels like she is still dreaming. After a while, Suzu begins to understand reality. She had just left the air raid shelter when an unexploded bomb exploded, killed Harumi (Inagaki Raizumi) and injured her. Suzu is overcome by unfathomable despair and sadness.
A few days later, Gozhong is hit by an air raid, and the area around the Hojo family home is also hit by incendiary bombs. Meanwhile, Shusaku (Matsuzaka Tori) , whose training has been canceled due to a change in the war situation, returns home. Shusaku congratulates Suzu, but seeing her husband's face, Suzu's tension eases and she collapses.
An unprecedented, gigantic mushroom cloud appears in the sky in the direction of Hiroshima. It is said that a new type of bomb has been dropped. Suzu (Matsumoto Honoka) is extremely worried about her family living in Eba, but there is nothing she can do alone. When Shusaku (Matsuzaka Tori) returns home, he is worried about her, but she remains brave. Suzu then vows to herself that she wants to become even stronger.
A few days later, a notice is circulated around the Hojo household. It tells them to wait in front of the radio for an important announcement at noon. Not only San (Ito Ran) and Keiko (Ono Machiko), but also Taki (Kino Hana) and other neighbors gather at the Hojo household.
The war is over. Although they no longer fear air raids, they continue to suffer from even greater shortages than during the war. At the Hojo household, Entaro (Taguchi Tomorowo) has found a new job, and Keiko (Ono Machiko) has also started working. However, Shusaku (Matsuzaka Tori), who was called up to join the Kaiheidan immediately after the end of the war, has yet to return. Suzu (Matsumoto Honoka) spends her days positively, hoping for her husband's safety.
One autumn day, Suzu, worried about the state of her parents' home, decides to head to Hiroshima.
