Segawa (Masahiro Motoki) works at an advertising agency. His job is busy and he comes home late every day, so he rarely has time to see his girlfriend, Naoko (Miwako Fujitani). One day, when Segawa comes home, he finds a recording of a woman moaning on his answering machine. The next day, Segawa witnesses a woman lying in a pool of blood in front of a public telephone booth under a nearby overpass.
Ayako (Yasuko Sawaguchi) has come to her alma mater, an elementary school, for her teaching practice. There is something she wants to confirm. She remembers locking a boy in shorts with no face in a school room and leaving him there when she was in elementary school. The place where that room used to be is now blocked off with a wall. Just then, while Ayako is on night duty, the phone, which was supposed to be broken, rings. When Ayako picks up the receiver, she hears a boy's voice saying, "Open up..."
Elite salaryman Department Head Imaseki (Masato Ibu) is out with his subordinates, laughing heartily as he boasts about himself. He gets into a taxi on the way home and enjoys watching a baseball game on TV. Suddenly, a pinch hitter comes up to bat in a crucial moment. "The third pitch is crucial, and the batter has hit it! Where will the ball go...?" the commentator says, holding his breath. Just then, the taxi enters a tunnel, and the radio signal cuts out. Imaseki, eager to find out the result...
Fujiko (Yuko Asano), a career woman who has achieved everything—money, fame, and more—before turning 30, still feels a sense of uncertainty about her life. One day, while driving home in a car driven by her subordinate, she gets lost in an alleyway while trying to avoid traffic. There, she unexpectedly encounters the fortune teller who predicted her future five years prior. The fortune teller suggests that Fujiko consider exploring another life, one that is far removed from her comfortable and glamorous existence.
