Vic Morrow narrates this 28 minute historical documentary originally produced by the U.S. Army Pictorial Service (circa 1963). The documentary chronicles the evolution of the American infantryman from the French and Indian War (Rogers' Rangers) through the Revolutionary War, Civil War, World Wars, and the Korean War. A significant portion is also dedicated to modern (1960s) training techniques at Fort Benning, which Vic Morrow visited and where he was dubbed an "honorary Doughboy". It features gritty, realistic footage of Rangers training, Special Forces (Green Berets) training and the Airborne school.

The directors and cast members discuss the somewhat controversial transition of the series to color in the 5th and final season. Part 1.
