It tells the tale of a young man dragged down by his ambitions and a girl both worshiped as a saint and maligned as a witch. For them, there is no happily ever after.

After infiltrating the mansion of the sadistic Lord Barnier to lead a slave revolt, Jacopo encounters Morgana, a "Saint" who has been tortured at blood feasts. Although he manages to rescue her amid the chaos of the rebellion, Jacopo must convince his friend Maria to take the traumatized girl into her brothel in the slums. As Morgana succumbs to despair and cries out for death, the young revolutionary makes a promise that will change their lives: that one day, he will show her the world.

After witnessing the murder of her parents and smiling in the face of torture, Ceren haunts her captors with an incurable joy. Although she learns to feign empathy in order to blend in with others, her psyche remains fragmented and incapable of feeling pain or fear.

After assuming the title of Lord Barnier and the identity of his predecessor, Jacopo finds himself isolated by paranoia as he attempts to revitalize the city through trade and religion.
